States Demand Insurers Disclose Climate Risks

This is a big wake-up call … first insurers will have to disclose climate change risks … and then it will be major corporations.  For example, shareholders will demand that Corporation XYZ delve into weather risk management techniques / consulting to protect its bottom line so that if and when it loses revenue due to a disaster, it can at least tell its stakeholders that it minimized its risks and lessened losses due to its commitment or partnership with a climate change consulting think-tank.  Check it out:  http://outofthestormnews.com/2012/02/02/new-climate-change-response-disclosure-requirement-for-insurers-in-three-states/.

Look Here: 2011 Extreme Weather Map

Americans are bearing the brunt of many of the insurance industry’s list of catastrophes, with $75 billion in losses, of which only about $35 billion were insured. Hurricane Irene cost the country an estimated $10 billion, only half of it covered by insurance. Flooding on the Mississippi River cost $2.6 billion, of which only a small portion was insured.  Here is a really cool compilation of the extreme weather events for 2011 across the Continental USA:  http://www.nrdc.org/health/extremeweather/default.asp.  The number of extreme weather events are increasing … so the question begs … are you ready, are you protected for any of these different types of weather abnormalities?  It’s all about insuring a climate-ready future.  And AFC is poised as a leader in climate change and planetary risk management.

Storms Without Names: Climate Shifting

Yes there are the Katrinas and Etnas of the world, but there are plenty of weather abnormalities and planetary risks without having a name assigned to them.  Read this interesting account of how climate shifts in Central America are affecting the way of life:  http://www.bostonreview.net/BR37.1/douglas_haynes_nicaragua_climate_change.php

If Only Company XYZ Knew

It’s of course easy to point out something after it has happened, but truly, this is a prime example of what we see time and time again … how a company did not prepare for extreme weather when it could have done if it had been “in the know” by receiving alerts of impending adversities from Mother Nature:  http://www.heraldsun.com.au/business/heavy-rain-impacts-borals-earnings/story-fn7j19iv-1226283867711.  Lesson here:  it’s really simple … tell us what affects your business, and we’ll show you — at no charge — a customized set of predictive intelligence that we know will help you plan ahead, optimize decisions and plan ahead.  We are confident in this after being in business almost 20 years.

Ouch! Bad Weather Hurts Nationwide

Nationwide Insurance Co.’s operating earnings fell 49 percent in 2011 on weather-driven losses in its property and casualty business.  Ouch!  Now of course, we cannot “avoid” all bad weather.  But we can definitely plan ahead and shape strategies and more to minimize losses associated with regional to global weather threat impacts.  Nationwide might have done everything possible.  But then again, hopefully we can all bring our expertise together to help companies like this, including yours?  Kindly review our Weather Dynamics pyramid at http://afcw.com/afc-open-book/what-we-do/our-edge/weather-risk-pyramid/.   We look forward to helping you move forward in a positive direction, despite the personal plans of Mother Nature.

Is Buffett Missing Something Big?

It’s just an open question … we’re not saying ‘yes he’s missing something big’ or ‘no, he isn’t missing anything big’, we’re putting it out there to think about it.  The reason it came up, is at a shareholder meeting, Buffett stated that climate change is not a material risk to Berkshire.  Really?  How about 2011 when the NZ earthquake, and the 3/11/11 mega-tsunami earthquake in Japan produced billions of losses for Berkshire.  Here’s an interesting article on this:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/r-paul-herman/warren-buffetts-billions-_b_1251884.html.
